A woman's most fertile time is during ovulation. Ovulation typically occurs within day 11 to day 21 of a woman's cycle.

Counting from the first day of a woman's last period, day 1 is the first day a woman starts bleeding, the 11th day is most likely the earliest day a woman will ovulate. The 21st day is most likely the last. A woman's period comes between the 28th and 32nd day of the cycle. This may differ slightly because each woman's cycle varies.

The American Society of Reproductive Medicine recommends women consult their health care provider if she is: 1) under 35 years old and has been trying to conceive for more than 12 months, or 2) over 35 years old and has been trying to conceive for over 6 months.

"Change in the cervical mucus is the only observable symptom that preceeds ovulation and, therefore, gives reliable warning of approaching fertility" , from the book Natural Fertility Management.
There are a few different types of mucus, 4 in fact but I will just describe the differences between infertile and fertile mucus here:
Infertile Mucus :is characteristically thick, opaque, tacky and sticky, like paper paste. This mucus does not protect or support sperm and the natural acidity of the vagina destroys the sperm. And sperm cannot swim through it!

Fertile Mucus : characteristically watery, fluid, thinner, clearer, slippery and more profuse... sperm can definitely swim through it. Like nature's KY jelly almost, think about it, the mucus is providing natural lubrication.

Usually if you have had a period it indicates that you aren't pregnant. However, sometimes women can bleed when they are pregnant but it is not like a normal period, that is, it is not the release of the womb lining like a normal period is. Generally this bleeding is different - in quantity and quality.

Getting pregnant after 40 is possible without fertility treatment, but your chances of having trouble conceiving are higher.

Of woman ages 40 to 44, 29% will experience infertility. You can compare this to woman in their early 20s, of which 7% experience infertility, or women in their early 30s, who experience infertility 15% of the time.

Your chances of conceiving in any given month are also lower once you pass the big 4-0. While a 30 year old has about a 20% chance of getting pregnant each month, a 40 year old only has a 5% chance per month. This means that even for those that will get pregnant, it may take longer.
